Patients who are interested in restoring their smiles with dental implants may find out that they are not a candidate due to bone loss. This doesn’t mean that they must give up on the idea of having implants. Instead, patients may be candidates for bone graft procedures.
Bone grafting is the building up of bone in the jaw to provide the proper foundation for dental implants. Bone is needed to give the implant something to fuse with to provide stability and strength. Dr. Yolanda Cintron finds that by building up the bone, the jaw is better suited for restoration such as zirconia dental implants.
The process begins with a consultation to determine if patients are interested in dental implants. This includes x-rays to check the status of the bone of the jaw. If there is insufficient bone for implants, the dentist may suggest bone grafting. This is done prior to placing the implant. Bone grafting may be done with donor bone or man-made materials to prepare for implants. Once the area is healed, dental implants are placed during oral surgery and allowed time to stimulate the process of osseointegration. This is the growth of bone to hold the implant in place. After osseointegration, the implants are ready for restoration with crowns, bridges depending on the specific needs of the patient.
The team of Go Natural Dentistry is excited to offer bone grafting for patients who have lost natural bone and are considering the placement of dental implants.
